The Institute is founded
Dr. Carl E. Misch establishes the first institute dedicated to teaching implant dentistry hands-on, in the surgical setting — didactic grounding followed by real time at the bench. The model becomes the template that implant continuing education still follows today.
The textbook that trained a generation
Dr. Misch publishes Contemporary Implant Dentistry. It becomes a standard reference in operatories and dental schools worldwide — the written record of a philosophy that treats implant dentistry as a rigorous, teachable discipline.
Engineering a better implant
Dr. Misch co-founds BioHorizons, carrying his research from bench to industry and helping bring the Maestro implant system to clinicians worldwide. He would ultimately hold 16 patents in implant design.
The Misch method goes global
Dr. Misch lectures in all 50 states and 47 countries, and the Institute takes root abroad — teaching across Brazil, Canada, Japan, Korea, and Europe. His textbooks are translated into nine languages.
A second landmark text
Dr. Misch publishes Dental Implant Prosthetics, pairing the surgical canon with a definitive reference on restoring the implant. Together, his books shape how two generations are trained.
Honored the world over
Honorary doctorates in Istanbul and Bucharest, the presidency of the International Congress of Oral Implantologists and the American Academy of Implant Dentistry, and more than 250 published articles cement Dr. Misch's standing as a defining voice in the field.
The founder passes
Dr. Carl E. Misch dies on January 4, 2017, weeks after his final lecture. An interim director carries the program forward in the years that follow.
The Institute closes its doors
Under its interim director, the Institute winds down and ceases operations. For the first time in nearly four decades, the Misch name goes quiet in implant education.
A new era begins
New leadership revives the Institute and rebuilds the continuum from the ground up — assembling a faculty of the world's leading implant educators and academic program directors to carry the Misch standard into its next generation.
